One of the best place in India. It is a tourplace. Lakhs of people come here every day. Some people comes for enjoyment, we are going to see maa kalijai and as a Island it makes us happy. Nature is beautiful surrounded allover kalijai. One thing that Don't like in that island the shopkeepers are take extra money for everything in that place. What a cheap quality mindset. I paid 30 rupees for 20 rupees cold drinks. Not only cold drinks , but also everything. As a place it is best. Holy place. Boats are too old, they are not replacing it. Govt. Should have to strict on behalf of tourists safety. You can check my image. Besides, it will be the memorable moment in your life. Use life jacket. 🙏🙏🙏Thank you.

Kalijai Temple is located on an island in Chilika Lake. It is considered to be the abode of the Goddess Kalijai. Goddess Kalijai is actually Kali, the source and the first 'Mahavidya' of 'Dasmahavidyas'. Highly revered by the local populace, the deity has been venerated in the local folklores and legends. The island provides an excellent destination for pilgrims as well as tourists. Every year in January, a huge gala fair is held during the festival of Makar Sankranti.
History:
Legend has it that a newly married girl (named Jaai) along with her father was going to meet her husband. As her in-law's house was on an island in Chilika Lake they had to take a boat to ferry them across the lake. Odisha's coast is very prone to Cyclones and during this boat trip they were encountered with a severe Cyclone, as a result their boat was capsized in the Chilika Lake. Only the boatman and her father survived this event except for the girl Jaai. They searched for her but were unable to locate her. After this accidental death of that newly wed girl, she became the Goddess of people residing nearby and till now, she is worshiped as an EXCERPT of Kali. And, this is how the place got its name.
Very Peaceful Awesome Place
Beautiful place. Mostly Recommend
Best island of Odisha..
The temple Island is surrounded by the water of Chilika Lake from all sides. The temple got its name as Maa Kalijai is worshiped inside the temple. It is strong belief that once a girl name Jai is traveling along with her father in a boat to the island for her marriage. At that time a severe storm came and the boat crashed here. All the peoples present in the boat survived except the girl Jai. After the incident many fisherman account of listening the voice of that girl. Jai came in his father-in-law's dream and said, "I will stay here, build my temple here, I will be worshiped here." As a result they started worshiping her in a temple. The temple got the name Maa Kalijai from the Goddess Kali and the girl Jai. Whoever travel to the Chilika lake must visit this temple as it is a holy place
Loved this island within Chilka Lake. We take speed boat from Brakul. 8 Kms in water from Brakul to Kalijai Island, it takes 30 minutes. Great place to visit once and offer Puja in the morning to Kali Mata. Enjoyed the view from boat to this island and from this island to the lake water. I also like the cleanness of this place. Fresh air from lake, pleasant environment and the temple will refresh your mind. We were there for 30 minutes, this time is not enough to explore the other area of this island.
Nature beauty is a beauty that creation of God. And most important thing nature beauty eye touched & feel the peace inside the soul. KALIJAI ISLAND is a holy place & historical place also (She met her tragic death and became the deity Kalijai. However, it's attributed to the imagination of the poet and may not be evidenced. Dr. Radha Charan Panda mentions in TheHistory of Parikud (1930) that this temple was built by Sri Jagannath Mansingh, king of Bankad (currently known as Banapur) in the year 1717.) Kalijai is a temple of goddess Kali in an island. By boat it will take 45 minutes to reach Kalijai temple. You can spend minimum 20 minutes here. So it will take minimum 2 hours to visit Kalijai temple and return to Barkul. ( Information- During daytime it is connected by boat. )
